NSW Senator Andrew Bragg has condemned the recent dual citizenship challenge against Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, describing it as “disgraceful”.

Speaking in the Senate last week, Bragg noted a “rising tide of antisemitism in Australia”, referring to a series of threats and vandalism in the past year.

On Frydenberg’s challenge, Bragg said, “This is an illegitimate challenge to the Treasurer’s citizenship by people who have an obsession with the Holocaust.”

In his speech Bragg attacked Kooyong resident and climate activist Michael Staindl – who initiated High Court proceedings against Frydenberg – as well as failed Kooyong candidate Oliver Yates and lawyer Trevor Poulton, who authored a book called The Holocaust Denier.

“Staindl, Poulton and Yates should all be ashamed of themselves for their appalling behaviour,” Bragg said.

“They are banding together in the shadows to try and unseat the son of a Holocaust survivor. They are pretending that they are not working together, when they clearly are.”

Stating, “We are proud of Jewish Australians,” Bragg added, “I call on our education sector to keep teaching the truth about the Holocaust. We cannot afford to forget – what begins with the Jews never ends with the Jews.”
