Baral bounds to title double at the champs

JUNIOR pole vault star Elizabeth Baral has excelled again, taking out both the under-17 and under-16 titles at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth recently.

JUNIOR pole vault star Elizabeth Baral has excelled again, taking out both the under-17 and under-16 titles at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth recently.

Baral smashed her previous personal-best jump of 3.4 metres, with a whopping leap of 3.56m to win the under-17 event and set a new NSW state record. She fell just short of 3.6m on a couple of occasions.

The star vaulter also managed to take out the under-16 competition with a jump of 3.45m.

She is now set for a berth at the 91st Australian Championships at Sydney Olympic Park in mid-April, before directing her attention to the 19th Maccabiah Games, which will take place in Israel in July.

Meanwhile, Victorian Piper Montag also took part in the junior championships, featuring in the under-14 long jump, triple jump and 80m hurdles.

Montag’s best performance came in the triple jump, where she recorded a distance a 10.37m, just four centimetres shy of a bronze medal.

She also placed ninth in the heats of the 80m hurdles in a personal-best time of 13.84 seconds, missing out on qualification for the final race by less than a second.

Montag’s final event was the long jump, where she placed 12th overall, with her best jump recording a distance of 4.63m, which was 40cm shy of third place.
