BEACH, bikinis … and Glick’s bagels?

Perhaps not your standard fish-and-chips beach fare? But there’s no reason to believe that when the iconic kosher bakery, Glick’s, sets up shop on the buzzing strip of Bondi Beach in the coming weeks, it won’t be a hit with beach-goers.

Construction is set to begin next Monday on the new eatery at 99 Hall Street, after Waverley Council recently approved Glick’s development application.

“We are so excited,” Glick’s NSW business manager Baruch Kluwgant told The AJN. “We’ve got a builder, and it should take two to four weeks [to get up and running]. We hope to be open a couple of days after Pesach [in April].”

“The community feedback has been incredible,” he added. “People in the streets keep telling me how excited they are that it is coming.”

Glick’s already has bakeries established on Bondi Road and St Ives Village Shopping Centre. However, this latest offering is being billed as more of a “business lunch-style” cafe, with an on-site chef and barista and a breakfast and lunch menu. It will also offer the full range of Glick’s products, as well as a small selection of kosher groceries and wines.

“It will cater to people who want to sit down and have a great dining experience,” Kluwgant said. “Sydney was really in need of a business lunch place, and we are happy to provide that.”

The store is also set to have a sleek, new look. “We brought up our designer from Melbourne who has been redesigning our stores there. He was instructed to make a shop that is true to the Bondi Beach feel,” Kluwgant added.

Mendel Glick opened his first shop on Kooyong Road in Caulfield in 1969, offering cookies and cakes. He later branched out into bagels and trade quickly picked up. Today, his bagels are a household name and there are 10 locations across Melbourne and Sydney.

Glick, who is now in his 80s, is said to still work six days a week, putting in 70 hours.
