Best Rosh Hashanah wishes from Kevin Sheedy

The Ark Centre's Rabbi Gabi Kaltmann blew the shofar for AFL and Essendon legend Kevin Sheedy and explained the nuts and bolts behind the Jewish New Year.

WHAT a sweet treat from an AFL legend, just before Rosh Hashanah!

In a 10-minute Zoom-based interview with Essendon hero Kevin Sheedy recorded earlier this month, the Ark Centre’s Rabbi Gabi Kaltmann – a 2020 AFL community ambassador – blew the shofar for him and explained the nuts and bolts behind the Jewish New Year and the Day of Atonement.

Clearly impressed, Sheedy said, “Best wishes from me, my family and the Bombers, shana tova u’metuka!”

Speaking about Essendon’s 1993 grand final win against Carlton, Sheedy said, “We were not expected to be in that grand final – we were known as the baby Bombers.”

He then quipped, “Jewish fans barrack for both clubs, and while I wouldn’t be surprised if there were many more Jewish fans of Carlton, I’d say we’ve got very high quality Jewish fans!”

Sheedy then reflected warmly on how, in the early ’70s, he invited AJAX Footy Club into his own community footy league in Melbourne’s south.

“They were terrific, and in the end, the best player in that league one season was – and you won’t believe this – was a kid called Anthony Pratt.”
