Blues ring Notre Dame’s bell

MACCABI demolished Notre Dame 66-0 in round six of the Jeffrey Cup at Wentworth Park on Saturday.

MACCABI demolished Notre Dame 66-0 in round six of the Jeffrey Cup at Wentworth Park on Saturday.

Captain Keith Friedlander said before the game that he didn’t want one point scored against his team and his players delivered, displaying guts, determination and brutal defence.

“I’m really stoked with that performance because we knew that we had points on the back of great defence,” said Friedlander, who returned after spending three weeks on the sideline after a concussion.

“I’m really proud of all of the boys. We knew that if [Notre Dame] didn’t want to be on the field because we were attacking them in defence, then we would be able to score points.

“After 10 minutes we hit them so hard that they didn’t want to be out there, even at their home ground in front of their own fans.”

Zac Selby scored two tries and made impressive decisions on debut for the Blues, while Maccabi’s forward pack dominated the game.

Friedlander said he enjoyed being back on the field and he’s looking forward to playing against Lane Cove, which is in second-last place on the competition ladder, next week.

“Next week we have the same objective – to not let them get across our line.”

While the Blues had a big win, the reserve-grade team was smashed 34-5. Maccabi dropped to eighth spot on the reserve grade ladder, but Friedlander said there is still hope.

“The reserve-grade team is a lot like the first-grade side if you look back a few years to when we started playing rugby.

“They have potential, youthful exuberance and I think they will come together as a team and start going forward and winning more games.”

Maccabi will play Lane Cove at Tantallon Oval on Tantallon Road in Lane Cove on Saturday. The reserve-grade team plays at 2pm and then the first-grade team at 3.15pm.
