KING David School year 9 student Ben Brill is carving out a name for himself after hitting the slopes in the recent Mount Buller Cup, where he took out the Under-16 Alpine Male category.

From a pool of 22 high-quality competitors, 15-year-old Brill emerged victorious with a combined time of 1 minute, 39 seconds from his two runs down the mountain.

Brill has previously won the 2012 Buller Cup while racing in the Under-14 category and was also awarded the Premier’s Cup in 2013, which recognised Brill as the fastest junior skier in Victoria, an award won by several Olympians in years gone by.

His 13-year-old brother Joshua also achieved a remarkable feat, placing 12th in the Under-16 Alpine category despite competing against skiers several years his senior.

Ben and Josh owe their skiing prowess to membership in the Mount Buller Race Club (MBRC), wherein they attend a private school on Buller during term 3 of the school year and train six days a week during this period.

The Brill’s receive guidance from renowned coaches at MBRC, while Ben has also travelled to Colorado, US for training with MBRC’s alpine head coaches, Richard and Rachel Haslau.

In 2014, eight ex-students of Mount Buller’s youth program travelled to Sochi, Russia as part of Australia’s Winter Olympics team.
