Carp to carry the flag at Pan American Maccabi Games
Swimmer Barry Carp has been announced by Maccabi Australia as the team captain and flagbearer for the 2019 Pan American Maccabi Games in Mexico.
Masters swimmer Barry Carp, 52, has been announced by Maccabi Australia as the team captain and flagbearer who will lead the 138-strong Australian team into Mexico City Arena for the opening ceremony of the 2019 Pan American Maccabi Games this weekend.
Carp said he was shocked and elated upon hearing the news that he will lead Australia’s largest team ever sent to a Pan American Maccabi Games.
“I was very humbled – it was a big surprise when [team general manager] Sam [Gamsu] dropped that on me. It’s a great honour,” he said.
More than 3,700 Jewish junior, open and masters athletes from 23 countries will compete in the Games in 11 sports until July 15.
Carp, from Melbourne, will swim in the men’s masters 50m and 100m breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle events in Mexico.
He holds 12 state and national swimming records, and won a bronze medal at the World Masters Championships in Budapest in 2017.
He also competed for Australia at the 2017 Maccabiah Games in Israel.
To make things even sweeter, Carp’s 17-year-old son, Harry, is also in the Australian team, as part of the youth basketball squad.
