Changing guard at NCJWA

THE National Council of Jewish Women of Australia (NCJWA) held its national conference last week, showcasing an array of dynamic speakers over three days and witnessing the inauguration of Rysia Rozen as the new president.

The theme of the quadrennial conference, this being the 30th national conference, was “Jewish Women Unite: Be Seen, Be Heard”.

Keynote speakers were Jane Counsel, former head of diversity and flexibility at Westpac Group, Ethy Levy, Israel Trade Commissioner, and Dr Eman Sharobeem, director of the NSW Immigrant Women’s Health Service.

Sharobeem moved the crowd at the gala closing dinner, recounting her own experience with domestic violence following an arranged marriage at age 15, and discussing the work she does today with women affected.

“For many mothers I see today, and you all see, the children are the cause for them to stay, to remain sometimes in a violent relationship. Don’t be surprised when women choose to be beaten up and stay,” Sharobeem said.

Reflecting on the success of the gathering, outgoing president Di Hirsh, who held the post for four years, said, “Over the three days of conference we workshopped how we can contribute to the fight against family violence and heard from inspirational speakers on trafficking of women and children, on overcoming obstacles when arriving in Australia as a refugee or new migrant, and on what Jewish Australia may look like in 2030.

“We gained strength from reviewing our accomplishments over the past four years and planning our priorities for the coming four years, including our commitments to our Israel projects.”

Hirsh’s successor Rozen, who has been appointed for a two-year term, previously served as national president of the organisation from 2007-2011, and has been involved with NCJWA for close to 30 years.

Speaking at the gala closing dinner, Rozen, from Melbourne, said she is thrilled to take up the role once again. She noted bringing a scholar in residence and initiating new projects among her plans for the role.

“With our combined passion, loyalty and dedication, we can make our dreams a reality,” she enthused.

A number of honour badges were presented at the closing dinner, recognising members for outstanding years of work in their respective sections.

Further, at the opening cocktail event, the NCJWA Women of Achievement Award was presented to Jillian Segal for her outstanding contributions to the general Australian community and the Jewish community.
