ON Sunday 15 September, Cremorne Synagogue celebrated the completion of a new Sefer Torah donated to the congregation by Paul and Zina Conway in honour of their grandson Corey’s recent bar mitzvah at the synagogue.

Paul and Zina are long-standing and much-loved members of Cremorne and are also well known for their decades of service to the wider community for which each was recognised in 2007 with a Medal of the Order of Australia.

A large crowd of congregants, friends, relatives and rabbis attended the event which was an especially joyous occasion.

Other members of the congregation donated accessories for the Torah scroll and many others purchased letters from the final sentences of the Torah, as is the custom.

Rabbi David Rogut, a long-standing friend of the Conway family, was given the honour of completing the final letter.

Cremorne’s Rabbi Chaim Koncepolski led the beautiful singing of prayers for the receiving of the Torah and then the celebrations followed with music, dancing with the Torah, and a wonderful supper.
