THE chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel has written to the “Jewish community of Australia and the people of Australia as a whole” expressing his “deep sympathy” in the wake of the bushfires.

In a letter addressed to Steven Lowy, chairman of the Keren Hayesod-United Israel Appeal World Board of Trustees, and Jeremy Leibler, president of the Zionist Federation of Australia, Isaac Herzog wrote, “The flames tearing through your beautiful land are an absolute tragedy.”

Recalling “my wonderful visits to your country” and stating, “I hold Australia very dear to my heart” and that “I treasure Australia’s devotion to the State of Israel,” Herzog added, “On behalf of the Jewish Agency, I extend our prayers for your safety and heartfelt wishes that this disaster comes to an end swiftly and with a minimal amount of wreckage.”

He concluded, “We look forward to better days and stand with you, eager to lend a hand!”
