Maccabi NSW and Maccabi Swimming Club pooled their resources to host the inaugural All Abilities Program session in Eisman aquatic centre at Moriah College on April 5.

Swimmers with a disability keenly joined in activities at the monthly swim club night, enjoying the welcoming environment and guided activities in the water.

Follow-up All Abilities sessions at the pool will be held on May 10 and June 21, from 5pm to 6.30pm.

And on May 1, an All Abilities tenpin bowling night is planned.

Program coordinator Ezra Mizrahi helped establish Maccabi NSW’s All Abilities program in January to provide more sporting and recreational opportunities for people living with a disability.

The program welcomes participants of all abilities and all ages.

Mizrahi told The AJN, “we believe we can play an important role in helping many people in our community, with inclusion being the ultimate goal”.

“We want to broaden the awareness of inclusion across the Maccabi organisation.

“To have the first event completed is a huge step forward, and for the participants to join in the [club’s] activities with the other swimmers for the first time is a great outcome.”

Mizrahi said that as the year progresses, a greater range of sports will be added to the All Abilities schedule, working with various Maccabi clubs to integrate the program with their existing activities.

The program will also aim to provide opportunities for individuals in the community who want to be involved in club committees, assisting in team management, or taking on leadership or mentoring roles.

“We hope to build from this first event and get more people involved for the next one,” Mizrahi said.
