‘ADORED BY HIS PEERS’

Teenager killed while kite-surfing mourned

14-year-old Alexi Bader has been remembered as an 'energetic, down-to-earth and empathic young man who was adored by his peers'.

YEAR 8 student at Sydney’s Emanuel School Alexi Bader has been remembered this week as an “energetic, down-to-earth and empathic” young man after losing his life in a kite-surfing accident on the weekend.

Alexi, 14, was kite-surfing off Silver Beach in Kurnell, NSW, on Saturday, when he got caught in a gust of wind and landed heavily on rocks.

As a result, he suffered severe injuries and, following a rescue operation, he was airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.

Despite the best efforts of hospital staff, Alexi tragically passed away.

“We are shocked by this devastating news and extend our heartfelt sympathy to Alexi’s parents, brother and family. Alexi will be sorely missed by his friends and teachers at Emanuel,” principal Andrew Watt said in a statement on Monday.

“The Emanuel School community wishes Alexi’s family long life; our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

The school said Alexi was a “much-loved member of the Emanuel community and has been described by his teachers as an energetic, down-to-earth and empathic young man who was adored by his peers”.

“Alexi loved to be outside and enjoyed playing rugby with his friends,” the school added.

Alexi is the son of Christelle Le Baccon, a well-known competitive kite-surfer.

Officers from the Marine Area Command are conducting inquiries into the incident and are speaking to family and witnesses.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
