POLICE have released images of a new suspect in the bombing of the Hakoah Club and Israeli Consulate on December 23 in 1982 as a “significant development”.

POLICE have released images of a new suspect in the bombing of the Hakoah Club and Israeli Consulate on December 23 in 1982 as a “significant development”.

They have also confirmed, for the first time, that members of Strike Force Forbearance have visited Israel and are working with Israeli authorities.

Detective Chief Superintendent Wayne Gordon released a photo of a woman, who allegedly paid for the 1970 green Valiant sedan that was used in the Hakoah Club bombing.

She is the third suspect after police announced, in August, that they are looking for two males.

Gordon also announced that forensic investigators have been able to determine that the two 15-kilogram gas cylinders that were used in the Hakoah bombing were taken from the NSW State Rail Authority.

“The investigation has progressed and the jigsaw, and the pieces of it, are starting to come together,” Gordon said.

“We are confident that people (in the community) know some of the people that were involved in this matter, know circumstances around these particular two bombings and we are asking those individuals to come forward.”

Strike Force Forbearance officers, which includes investigators from the NSW Police, ASIO, Australian Federal Police and the NSW Crime Commission, has travelled to America and Israel.

“We have had members of the joint counter terrorism team travel to the United States and Israel and conducted enquiries,” Gordon said.

“We have been in contact with the FBI and the national police in Israel.

“We are working with the Jewish community and we are advising some of the community leaders on a regular basis.

“Make no mistake. It is quite clear that the intent was to drop that building.”

On December 23 in 1982 two people were injured when a bomb exploded in the stairwell of the Israeli Consulate General in William Street at 2pm.

Less that five hours later the Hakoah Club was the subject of a second attack.

A bomb was found in the boot of a car in the Hakoah Club’s car park but it failed to explode.

No one was injured, but police have stated that “the the placement of this explosive device was designed to collapse the building”.

At the time, the attacks were linked to international terrorist organisation May 15 and a person was charged, but those charged were withdrawn by the NSW Attorney General.

Hakoah Club president Phil Filler said that although the event happened 30 years ago, the club welcomes the ongoing police investigation.

If any members of the public know the two men or the woman whose images have been released contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
