Jewish guns get call-up

JEWISH futsal guns Jarrod Basger and Jordan Mundell are excelling in the current NSW Futsal Premier League, with both earning a call-up to the NSW squad, alongside fellow Maccabi star Lev Lewis, for the FFA Futsal National Championships in January.

Basger is again starring for league-leaders Dural Warriors, but his season has come to a halt with a soft tissue injury.

“We’ve been doing really well, but I’ve missed out on the last four games,” Basger told The AJN.

“I probably won’t play until the national champs in a few weeks and hopefully I’ll be right by then.

“I can’t wait to play at the nationals, it’s always fun and especially now playing with Jordan and Lev.”

The 22-year-old was recently the joint top-scorer for the Futsalroos squad that finished runner-up at the AFF Futsal Championship, meaning Australia has qualified for next year’s AFC Futsal Championships.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Basger said.

“Our goal is to reach the semis and go one step further than we did last time when we finished fourth, but we’ve definitely shown signs of development and we’re looking to get even better.”

Meanwhile, Mundell has also stood out in his debut Premier League season with third-placed Campbelltown Quakes.

“It’s definitely a step up in class, but I’m relishing the opportunity,” Mundell said.

“We had a poor start and it was tough cracking into the team, but now everyone has the right belief and it’s been good getting a lot of game time.

“I’ve captained for most of the games and I like having the control and confidence of leading the side.”

The 23-year-old was a part of the Futsalroos squad in 2011 and aims to return to the national team on the back of consistent performances in the Premier League.

“It was one of the main reasons I joined Campbelltown,” Mundell said.

“I still have the desire to get back into the team and hopefully I do well over the next couple of months.”

Maccabi will also be represented at under-19 level at the national champs by Dylan Basger, Robbie Ezekiel and Jonathan Barzel under the guidance of coach Gareth Naar, while Elliot Lipschitz will play for NSW in the under-13 competition.
