Jewish schools win with Gonski

JEWISH schools will not lose funding under the proposed changes announced by the Federal Government last week in response to the Gonski Review into education.

Co-chair of the Australian Council of Jewish Schools Stephen Rothman said the a guarantee by the Government that each school will retain its current funding levels and have a three per cent increase or a formulaic adjustment, whichever is higher, is a positive result.

“That guarantee is very significant and will ensure our funding,” Rothman said.

An extra $14.5 billion has been committed to the education system over the six-year period from 2014-19. $12.1 billion will go to the public schools, $1.4 billion to Catholic schools and only $1 billion to independent schools.

“There is a significant amount of additional equity being place in education, and in my view rightly so.

“In our view it is not being as equitably distributed as it could be between government and non-government schools, but we can’t complain about the funding for our individual schools.”

Rothman said there are still issues to be sorted out when the details are revealed and worked through.

“There are issues about funding of pre-schools and other issues that need to be ironed out in the process of implementation.

“We will appeal, as part of the process, to deal with peculiarities of the Jewish community and we hope the appeal process will enable us to remedy those decisions.”
