Joshua Levi’s reporting praised
Emanuel Synagogue's senior Rabbi Jeffrey Kamins described Levi as a 'driving force in the Jewish community to make sure that there was a positive response to the Royal Commission'.
PRAISE was recently bestowed upon former CEO of The AJN, Joshua Levi, who tragically passed away in February, for his “unwavering commitment to victims and survivors of child sexual abuse”.
“Josh’s reporting on these issues was unflinching … he was instrumental in exposing these matters to the community,” said lawyer Louise Brandon, who worked on the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and discussed the commission’s operations and findings at an Emanuel Synagogue online talk.
The shule’s senior Rabbi Jeffrey Kamins described Levi as a “driving force in the Jewish community to make sure that there was a positive response to the Royal Commission”.
Levi was responsible for some of The AJN’s biggest and most important stories, notably covering the scourge of child abuse in the community and the 2015 Royal Commission, for which he won a number of awards.
In February, federal MP Josh Burns delivered a moving tribute in Parliament to Levi, describing him as “a fine journalist who rose through the ranks of The Australian Jewish News, from a reporter to become its CEO”.
“Josh understood the power of a story but also the importance of journalistic integrity,” Burns said.
“Josh’s pursuit of justice for victims of child sexual abuse was unflinching.
“He stared down pressure and threats – including legal ones – and was still fighting for victims until the very end.”
NSW MP Ron Hoenig also paid tribute in a speech to state Parliament, stating, “Our community has lost an outstanding journalist in his passing.
“Josh was well known to many members of this House, and his contribution to journalism in just 36 short years of life was exceptional.”
Hoenig added, “Josh’s contribution to the community by informing us and fearlessly holding all parts of our community to account made us better; far better than we were.”
