Levin wanders Down Under

AMERICAN soccer star Camille Levin is four games into her stint with W-League side Western Sydney Wanderers, having joined the Aussie club after a successful campaign in the Swedish Cup with Goteberg FC.

The 23-year-old has played every minute in her four appearances so far and is enjoying life Down Under.

“I really like it here, it’s a beautiful place,” Levin told The AJN.

“I didn’t know a lot about Australia before I came, but I’d heard great things about the league and definitely wanted to make full use of the opportunity.

“I’ve been really impressed and it’s been a great experience, I love the team on and off the field and the whole organisation has been great.”

Levin was born and raised in a family with rich Jewish heritage and said it plays a strong role in her life.

“[Judaism] is definitely a part of my identity,” Levin said.

“My family attends an Orthodox Chabad shul back home and we went to Jewish schools, from kindergarten all the way through to high school.”

After being drafted at pick number four into America’s W-League to Pali Blues, Levin moved to Sweden to play with dual champions Goteberg.

With the Swedish season completed, the Wanderers picked up the versatile defender late last year to boost its premiership ambitions.

But having won just two out of six games so far, Levin believes the team has a long way to go if it is to challenge for the title.

“I’m happy that the team has progressed in the four games I’ve been here, but there’s obviously been some ups and downs,” Levin said.

“We’ve been getting better and we’ve had some injuries, so for us it’s about taking it one game at a time and getting the results we need, because there’s still time to make finals.”

Levin has just finished her time as captain of USA’s under-23 side – having previously skippered the under-18, under-17 and under-16 national teams – and with the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup only 18 months away, she hopes to crack a spot in USA’s top representative team.

“I’ve surpassed the under-23 level, so my goal now is to make the full sen- ior team,” Levin said.

“For me, it’s about continuing to improve during my time here, get better on my game and hopefully I get the opportunity.”
