THREE Maccabi junior basketball teams took out their respective grand finals on the weekend, with another three finishing runners-up.

The highlight of the finals was the all-Maccabi hit-out in the under-14 competition, with the Devils edging out the Cavaliers 37-18.

The Devils jumped out to an early lead through some nice shooting from Jordan Spyradis (18 points), but the younger and less experienced Cavaliers held on to keep the margin to seven at the main break.

The Devils ran away with the game in the second half through Greg Diamond (11 points) and Dylan Katz (six points).

Cavaliers’ Mikey Benchoam was nullified by the Devils’ strong defence, led by Matt Gamerov and Ben and Josh Fischl.

The under-16 girls’ Cheetahs capped off a stellar season with a 22-18 win over rivals Newtown.

Pnina Hegege put in her best per- formance for the year, rebounding well at either end and knocking down nine points.

Amy Altman also hit nine points and Dani Tischmann added four, with strong support from Martine Agranat, Claudia Kaplan, Brianna Gadley, Becky Dunkel, Sabrina Penkin and Jesse Shagrin.

The under-12 boys’ Kings did it fairly easy in their 33-14 grand final victory over Newtown Sonicboom.

Matthew Bozic (14 points) and Ryan Collins (12) led the way for the Kings, which led from start to finish in a clinical display.

The side’s aggression and intensity from the get-go was impressive, with Josh Nicholson and Jesse Waller battling hard, along with Shannon Mayer, Adam Shagrin and Lachlan Corne.

The Rockets were unable to get up in the other under-12 competition, going down to Bronte 22-14. The side, led by Julian Glass’s 10 points, put up a brave fight, but eventually fell short.

The under-16 Suns never stood a chance against a slick Inner City, losing 30-7 in a disappointing end to the season.

The side got off to a slow start and failed to recover, with Dylan Belcher (three points), Ari Levy (two) and Jarred Silberman 9two) the only scor- ers.

Maccabi’s under-10 Thunder did a great job to get to the grand final, but was was trumped by Woollahra Bulldogs Reds 15-11.

It was neck-and-neck for much of the game, but the Thunder was overrun late in the match.
