SEVERAL Maccabi Hakoah guns were on show for NSW at the recent FFA National Futsal Championships in Canberra, headlined by the star foursome of Jordan Mundell, Jarrod Basger, Lev Lewis and Max Nightingale in the open men’s side that finished runner-up to ACT.

After finishing on top of the group with three wins from four matches – which saw at least two of the Jewish players find the back of the net in every game – the NSW Thunder team eventually fell to ACT 3-1 at the final hurdle.

Mundell, 23, was the pick of the bunch – not just for the Jewish contingent, but for the entire NSW squad – finishing with five goals for the tournament, closely followed by Basger, 22, with four.

Lewis, also 22, scored the Thunder’s first goal only 25 seconds into its opening game with South Australia, but was unable to find the net for the remainder of the tournament.

Seventeen-year-old Nightingale made his debut for NSW’s top side, pulling off an incredible save in the semifinal against South Australia to ensure his side advanced to the final.

Meanwhile, young guns Robbie Ezekiel, Jonathan Barzel and Dylan Basger were all standouts for NSW’s Youth Men team that defeated ACT 4-0 in the grand final.

Ezekiel and Barzel both scored in the ultimate playoff for the side led by Maccabi coach Gareth Naar.

Fellow Maccabi youngsters Alex Gwozdecky and Elliot Lipshut were also in action for NSW’s junior sides.

Naar said he was proud of the Maccabi contingent at the national championships, which earned high praise from several of the other coaches.

“While winning trophies is amazing, we at Hakoah have always had a development ethos, so to get feedback like this is a feather in our caps.”
