Maccabi leaders off to Israel

MACCABI Australia (MAI) recently farewelled 12 participants who have gone to Israel for the second instalment of the Maccabi Sports Leadership Program.

The group of a dozen leaders will be taking part in six key elements of the program, involving leadership, sports management, experiencing Israeli culture, community involvement, a visit to Poland and playing a key role in the youth management at the Maccabiah Games in July.

“This is a wonderful program that engages the young community and develops future leaders,” Jeff Sher, MAI board member in charge of the leadership portfolio, told The AJN.

“It provides them with genuine life skills in leadership and sport management, which they can then provide for the community when they return, be it with Maccabi or another organisation in the community.”

The five-month-long program will see the group based at various cities and kibbutzes across the country, as well as key places like the Wingate Institute, before they join the March of the Living in Poland in April.

But the main highlight will be their involvement in the Maccabiah Games, where the leaders will assist in the coordination of the junior events and teams.

“They apply the skills they learn on the program first in the community in Israel and then in the Maccabiah,” Sher said.

“[At the Games] they’ll mostly be involved in the junior contingencies from around the world and assisting in the sports management in regard to helping them develop programs for the kids.”

The group is being led by madrich Dion Esterman and includes Victorians Tamar Simai, Ryan Prince, Lauren Yarrow, Jarred Krowitz, Zoe Diamond, Veronica Goldring, Levi Lewis and Rohan Gordon, West Australians Avishai Brown and Arielle Hochberg, New South Welshman PJ Beran and American Derrick Sheldon.
