PARTICIPANTS of the Maccabi Sports Leadership Program (MSLP) are two months into their Israel adventure, aimed at turning the budding administrators into the next generation of leaders in Australian Jewish sport.

The group was based in Jerusalem for the first few weeks, where they took in the sights of the ancient city and explored the history of the Jewish people.

They then headed to Kibbutz Ketura, near Eilat, for a few days of bonding, before returning to Jerusalem for another week, which included a community service experience at the Chazon Yeshaya soup kitchen.

The future leaders then moved to Tel Aviv, where their time at Israel’s national centre for physical education and sport, the Wingate Institute, began.

The group spent a monthIsrael’s premier sporting institution, where they undertook a sports management program and had the opportunity to hit the field for some exhibition matches in several sports.

Participants had the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, as well as get involved in the Spivak sports institute for people with a disability.

Spivak is home to disabled athletes from all walks of life and provided the group with the opportunity to partake in a wheelchair basketball game.

They also attended the national wheelchair basketball final, which a team from Spivak won.

Participants then ventured to a nature park in Netanya for a three-kilometre orienteering trail, before returning to Wingate to delve into an education course designed to give them valuable insight into sports science.

After some time off, the group reconvened at Wingate for a sports business and marketing seminar, where they learnt about management, marketing and media, inter- twined with physical activity and coaching lessons.

“As we delve into the exciting world of sports science and sports business, I think we are all developing more of an idea of how we can help the Maccabi and sporting community when we return home to Australia at the end of our six months here in Israel,” participant Zoe Diamond wrote on MSLP’s blog.

After their time at Wingate, the participants then undertook the Gadna program, which prepares teenagers for military service in the Israel Defence Forces, as well as a community service experience with Magen David Adom and Jewish National Fund.

They then headed to Poland for the March of the Living. The program will conclude with the participants assisting organisers at the Maccabiah Games in July.
