Maccabi’s weekend sweep

Maccabi’s weekend sweep

LAST weekend saw a momentous round of games for Maccabi Futsal in Sydney, with all nine teams winning every game they played, something that has never happened before in the club’s history.

On top of the landmark round, Maccabi’s senior men’s and Under-12s sides are still undefeated a little over halfway through the season.

Their scorching form, combined with stellar results from the three other men’s sides – Under-14s, 16s and reserves – as well as the women’s squads – Under-13s, 15s, 17s and seniors – has Maccabi posed second out of 13 clubs on the Super League table, which combines match points from all the club’s teams.

New coaches have reinvigorated a club that was under threat of folding several years ago. Lead by Jarrod Basger (Futsalroo), Jordan Mundell (Futsalroo), Paul Meltz and overseen by Steve Knight (ex-Australian coach), the Maccabi Futsal staff are helping put together a tremendous season.

Basger is also a star striker with the senior side and leads the men’s competition for goals scored. Another of Maccabi’s top performers is Emma Scott. The foremost goal scorer in both the Under-17 and senior women’s competition, Scott notched 11 goals in the past weekend, four in the women’s and seven for the 17s.

Meanwhile, Maccabi’s young guns Ethan de Melo and Zac Sapsford share the top spot of the goal tally in the Under-12s league.

Club president Daniel Sharp told the AJN
that traditionally the club had a mixed roster of strong and weak teams, but there’s been a lot of positive changes that are now showing on the pitch.

“Thanks to the coaches and hard work this year we are strong across the board,” Sharp said.

“No one gave us a chance of winning (the Super League) at the beginning of the year, but it is now a real possibility. For the first time ever, our four women’s teams won every game against a top four club.

“Hopefully we win the competition but, whether we do or not, next year will be even better, with preparations starting for Maccabiah and the men’s team travelling to Europe to defend their European Maccabiah title.”
