Mobags muster win for Maccabi touch

THE Maccabi Touch Football Club won its first grand final in three years on Sunday when the Mobags defeated the Pistons 7-3 to clinch the mixed division three crown.

The Mobags returned to winning ways after tasting success four year ago and it was fitting that two of the side’s foundation players, Daniel Kochan and Nicky Goldberg, were the standout performers in a strong victory.

The side lost to Pistons just a fortnight ago, but a change in tactics reaped immediate dividends.

A wide-running Robbie Ezekiel grabbed two first-half tries, with Kochan throwing the final pass on both occasions.

Another big improvement from their last encounter was the side’s defence, which saw Tali Ezekiel and Alice Kreisler work extremely well.

The side kept its composure in the second period after seeing three tries denied in close calls, before conceding back-to-back.

But Kochan then created breathing space with a brilliant runaway solo effort down the right edge.

Goldberg and Robbie Ezekiel both scored to extend the lead, before Ben Kochan – playing his first season alongside his brother – also streaked away to seal the game.

“We fielded a record amount of teams this season, and had seven make the play-offs, so it was terrific to be able to cap off the summer with a great win,” club president David Weiner told The AJN.

“It’s really pleasing and bodes well for the club to have won the league with so many of the youngsters com- ing on in leaps and bounds.”

Last week, Magic (mixed division two), Mob 2 (men’s division seven) and United (men’s division eight) all bowed out at the preliminary final stage.

Yotam Hatzvi was inspirational for Magic as they went down swinging against Flamengos.

The side ran out of gas after a cracking first half, where club stalwart Keren Tuch led the way and was ably supported by the dangerous Ben Stern and hardworking Richie Eisenstein.

Mob 2 and United were also overrun in their grand final qualifiers. Daniel Munitz was the best for Mob 2, while Mark Brandon tried every trick in the book to get his United side over the line.
