THE motive behind an attack on two Jews on Erev Shavuot is still unknown.

Dozens of Community Security Group (CSG) volunteers were called in on Saturday night when a young Jewish woman was stabbed in the neck and face in Caulfield North.

The 25-year-old Beth Rivkah College graduate and her 22-year-old brother were standing in front of their house when they were seemingly randomly attacked at 7.10pm.

She was taken to hospital, and has since been discharged, while he was treated at the scene after being hit on the head and sustaining minor injuries. The assailant, who fled the scene, was a Caucasian male in his early 20s dressed in black.

While the siblings have been described as identifiably Jewish, according to both the police and the CSG there is no indication that is the reason why they were attacked or that anti-Semitism was the motive.

Victoria Police told The AJN, “Investigators were told a man and woman were standing outside an address on Inkerman Road when an unknown man approached them without speaking and hit the man and cut the woman on the shoulder and cheek with an unknown object before walking away.”

The AJN also understands that police increased the amount of patrols and foot officers in the area following the attack.

Given the incident took place 500m from a synagogue and on Erev Shavuot, CSG took precautionary measures. “Until the motive could be ascertained, CSG prepared for the worst and we were able to quickly have more volunteers throughout the community,” Ricky Pearl, the head of the CSG in Victoria, told The AJN.

CSG asked the community to walk home in large groups for their own protection.
“We would like to thank all volunteers, who interrupted their Saturday night and weekend plans to help protect the community.”
