Netballers get Oz call-up

NETBALLER Joel Gocs has been selected for the Australian men’s under-23 team to take part in the inaugural World Men’s and Mixed Netball Championships to be held in South Africa in October.

NETBALLER Joel Gocs has been selected for the Australian men’s under-23 team to take part in the inaugural World Men’s and Mixed Netball Championships to be held in South Africa in October.

His selection was announced at the weekend following the completion of the week-long Australian Men’s and Mixed Netball Championships, which saw the Victorian under-23 team – of which Gocs is vice-captain – win the national title.

“It was a great team effort to win the grand final and a great thrill to be selected in the Australian team,” Gocs told The AJN after the announcement.

In the national championships held at the Boroondara Sports Complex, teams from Victoria, NSW, Queensland and WA competed in six categories – open men, open mixed, men’s reserve, under-23 men, under- 19 men and under-17 Boys.

The Victorian men’s under-23 team finished on top of its division and played the Victorian development team in the grand final. After a tight three quarters, the senior side broke away in the last quarter to win 47-35.

Gocs, who was playing in his fifth national championships, was a member of the Australian men’s under-23 team that defeated New Zealand 3-0 in the Trans-Tasman Test series held in Auckland in October last year.

Another Jewish netballer, Adam Zemski, 30, competed for the NSW open men’s team and although his side did not reach the grand final – which was won by the Victorian men’s open team – he was selected in the open reserves squad that will compete in the world titles in South Africa.

The world championships in South Africa will feature teams from around the world competing in three divisions – men’s open, mixed open and men’s under-23.
