ORAH Project giving charities a boost

JEWISH charities are the big winners in the latest round of donations provided by the ORAH Project, an innovative investment fund established by Sydney’s Carole and Russel Pillemer in December 2016.
This month, ORAH is providing almost $100,000 to 17 not-for-profit organisations in NSW and Victoria, and to community development and environmental projects in Israel.
That brings the total donated in just over two years since launching to $379,846.
The donations are possible due to ORAH’s fund managers donating all their management fees, with a committee then determining which Jewish charities will benefit each allocation round.
NSW Jewish charities will receive the biggest share of the latest allocation with $43,745. The JCA will receive three-quarters of that amount, provided that $10,000 is directed to one of its member organisations, the Sydney Jewish Museum.
The Friendship Circle NSW and Jewish House will receive $5000 each.
Six Victorian Jewish charities – JeneScreen, Friendship Circle Vic, Emmy Monash, Communal Security Group Vic, Courage to Care Vic, and Jewish Care – will share in $21,773 worth of donations.
The largest grant in Victoria, $5400, will go to Jewish Care.
Projects in Israel will be boosted by a $32,270 donation. These include $12,000 for UIA’s Amigour and Youth Futures projects, and through JNF, $8000 for Derech Eretz and $2000 for Make-A-Wish Israel.
Derech Eretz helps regional Israeli communities that lack social resources, Amigour provides housing in Israel for Holocaust survivors and elderly people in need, and Youth Futures mentors thousands of disadvantaged Israeli students each year.
Israel’s Save-A-Heart will receive $2270, and MDA and ZDVO will be allocated $2000 each.
The Pillemers have pledged to “continue to work hard to identify amazing causes within our community, both in Australia and overseas, that can benefit from the fund’s charitable allocations”.
The next round of ORAH donations this year will be distributed on June 30.
