IT was during a visit to the mountains of Ecuador last month as part of a six-week South American holiday that Sydney graphic designer Eli Hochberg set out to photograph a swing in a remote treehouse popular with thrillseekers.

Billed as the wildest swing in the world, it is situated above an abyss at Casa Del Arbol in the mountains near the town of Banos overlooking an active volcano.

Hochberg’s picture has won The AJN’s annual holiday photo competition and wins a three-night stay at the luxury Peppers Airlie Beach resort in the Whitsundays.

“It was a great trip and I ran into many Aussies and Israelis while in South America, and got lots of great photos,” he said.

Hochberg, 24, of Dover Heights, loves to travel and take prize-winning photos – three years ago he won The AJN’s sunset competition with a shot taken in New York.

He hopes to return to New York this year to spend time working as a designer.

The winner of the best sunrise/sunset competition is Ariel Mekler-Peled of Bellevue Hill, who volunteers as the education officer on the NSW executive of the Australasian Union of Jewish Students.

Her winning entry was taken on the beach in Tel Aviv in December while participating in a six-week AUJS leadership development program.

“We were sitting on the beach during the program and the sun was such a vibrant red colour – fortunately I had my camera with me,” said Mekler-Peled, who is a keen photographer and is studying photography at the University of New South Wales as part of her double degree in secondary education and fine arts.

Her prize is a two-night stay at Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas on the Sunshine Coast.

The photo competitions were judged by a panel and AJN readers. There was also a prize for a lucky voter – Asher Waxman has won the prize of a two-night stay at The Reef House, a boutique resort in Palm Cove in tropical Queensland.
