Philippsohn made life governor
Former JCA president Peter Philippsohn has been made the eighth JCA life governor.
FORMER JCA president Peter Philippsohn has been made the eighth JCA life governor.
Philippsohn served as JCA allocations committee chairperson, appeal chairman, on several task forces and committees and, most recently, as president for four years between 2011 and 2014.
Accepting the honour, Philippsohn said the life governors help the organisation maintain contact with JCA’s history, to provide a council which can speak from experience, and most of all speak up about what is right not who is right.
Reflecting on the monthly meetings he had with life governors while president, he said, “I saw this meeting as a private performance review for the president and CEO.”
“Though the discussion was always respectful, it was often robust. The input given was not from armchair coaches but from ex-players who knew and still know the game.”
Former JCA president and fellow life governor Peter Wise insisted he has always been impressed with Philippsohn.
“I think I can say confidently that whatever Peter has done, he has done with consensus,” Wise said.
He added that Philippsohn has helped JCA accomplish goals, stay united and that the organisation is in a better place now than when he first joined the leadership ranks many years ago.
“Being the leader of JCA is not an easy job, but Peter is someone who has a special style; and that has enabled him to guide the JCA ship through sometimes choppy waters; and to keep it united and on a steady course.
JCA CEO Daniel Grynberg said that Philippsohn embodies everything that is great about JCA and the community.
“He works tirelessly for others, and is prepared to do the hard yards of actually raising money,” Grynberg said. “He always comes into JCA’s office with a smile, and seems weekly to have another ambitious plan on the boil. If JCA’s honorary life governors are our ‘wisdom elders’ then Peter has been one for many years.”
Life governors of JCA include Wise, Barry Smorgon, Peter Ivany, David Balkin, Jill Segal and Richard Scheinberg. The late Hal Goldstein was also a life governor.
