PIPING hot pumpkin soup, fresh bread rolls and plenty of cookies lovingly prepared by Our Big Kitchen (OBK) volunteers were served to more than 350 CEOs at Carriageworks on June 23 in support of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout.

OBK executive director Rabbi Dovid Slavin was busy all evening lending a hand and OBK general manager Russel Levert stayed on until sunrise, snuggling into his sleeping bag on the cold concrete outside alongside the other CEOs.

Together through sponsorships they raised $1,780,000 for vital services for the homeless – estimated to number 105,000 Australians on any given night.

Levert told The AJN the experience gave him a sense of what too many homeless people have to deal with.

“Unless you walk a mile in their shoes, you don’t know how homeless people live.

“They are people who fall on hard times and are out of luck – and it can happen to anyone.”
