Super choice at supermarket
Coles' newly rebuilt Glenhuntly Road supermarket will feature an expanded array of kosher foods and services.
AFTER a two-year hiatus, kosher consumers in Elsternwick and surrounds will have the chance to welcome an old friend back to the neighbourhood from this Sunday, with Coles opening the new version of its iconic Glenhuntly Road supermarket, featuring a greatly expanded array of kosher foods and services.
Kosher Australia general manager Yankel Wajsbort said the kashrut authority has “been working closely with Coles since 2011 and we see the new Coles Elsternwick as the climax of our collaborative efforts to date. We have no doubt that the kosher consumer will embrace the store”.
He added, “In addition to assisting with expanded kosher meat and dry goods sections, we will be supervising an in-house kosher bakery, kosher deli offerings and expanded hot fleishig ready-to-eat options.”
Thanking customers for their patience over the past two years, store manager John Siriopoulos, well known to kosher customers from the previous Coles Elsternwick, told The AJN the new store “will have a great kosher range, along with many all new Coles concepts. Further initiatives will also be introduced in coming months, particularly in the deli area. The team and I are looking forward to servicing the community”.
The fully rebuilt supermarket, which will be double the size of the previous one, will have a permanent on-site mashgiach, and will feature a diverse menu, including three varieties of roast chicken, newly introduced roast beef, and a fish section operating Sunday-to-Friday, he announced.
Siriopoulos said meats from Continental and Solomons will be stored in a separate free-standing fridge shelf to minimise the possibility of confusion with non-kosher products, and there will be a kosher-only freezer.
Meanwhile, an in-store bakery will provide loaves, rolls and buns freshly baked on site to pat Yisrael standard (with the participation of an observant Jew), as well as sweet and raisin challahs on Fridays. Not all baked goods will have kosher certification, but their status will be clearly marked.
It is claimed the variety of specifically kosher Australian and imported frozen, fridge and dry goods items exceeds anything previously offered at any Melbourne supermarket. While for now the kosher deli section will only have packaged goods, there are plans to expand this.
Prepared take-home heat-and-eat kosher meal items will also be stocked. Kosher Australia’s certification will be included on price tickets, as in the previous Coles, and, in the lead-up to Passover, a far greater selection of kosher for Pesach goods than was previously stocked will be part of the new Coles offering.
