SEVENTY years of Australian bipartisan agreement on Israel are over. On Tuesday, four days after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that Australia now recognises West Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the Australian Labor Party – which says it will reverse that recognition in government – passed a resolution to recognise Palestine as a state.

JEWISH history was made in our nation's capital last Sunday when Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove officially unveiled the first ever Australian Jewish War Memorial (AJWM), which commemorates all 341 Jewish Diggers who are known to have died on active service for their country from 1900 to today.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will be joined by senior politicians, military personnel and communal leaders next Tuesday when they stand shoulder to shoulder with their Israeli counterparts in Beersheba to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landmark battle that saw the defeat of the Ottoman Turks and helped pave the way for the establishment of the Jewish State.

OUR community is justifiably concerned about recent developments within the ALP. The misguided push by some elements, led by Bob Carr, to unilaterally recognise the "State of Palestine" has gained some traction at recent state Labor conferences. Much of the rhetoric emanating from supporters of the Palestinian cause has been inflammatory, including morally offensive comparisons with apartheid South Africa. These decisions will have no bearing on Labor's foreign policy determined at its 2018 national conference.
