WHILE the final preparations are underway for Mitzvah Day this Sunday, November 15, the organising committee stressed that there is still time to register for the day of good deeds.

Some highlights of this year’s program include preparing and distributing food to isolated and disadvantaged members of the community with C-Care, creating gift hampers for women and children who have fled domestic violence shelters with Etz Chayim Synagogue and helping out at Stand Up’s community picnic with the Sudanese communities at the King David School (KDS).

These staple events are among more than 60 other projects happening around Melbourne that all help make the community a better place.

Discussing the spirit of Mitzvah Day, chair of the committee Judy Feiglin said it unites the different factions of Jewish organisations while building bridges between the Jewish and wider communities.

“I really like how different parts of the community come together on projects. From the website I noticed that KDS is working with the Ark Centre and Stand Up, and I think it’s wonderful that orthodox, reform and a secular organisation work together to make a difference.

“It’s about different parts of the community coming together and working together and making good things happen.”

Now in its fifth year, Feiglin said Mitzvah Day has become a highlight of the Melbourne Jewish calendar, as every year it expands to include more organisations and individuals inspired by making the world a better place.

“If you say Mitzvah Day, people know what you’re talking about and that’s really important. It’s become entrenched in the community and people are looking forward to it.”

Listing other exciting projects for this year’s event, Feiglin said Temple Beth Israel is running seven events, Magen David Adom is hosting a blood drive and Jewish Care Victoria has arranged activities for its senior citizens.

She said there are many programs that need extra hands and urged the community to get involved “for the common good”.

Mitzvah Day is on Sunday, November 15 around Melbourne. For more information or to register, visit www.mitzvahday.org.au.
