UNITED Israel Appeal (UIA) federal treasurer Julian Black was recently honoured with a Yakir Award at the opening of the annual Keren Hayesod-UIA (KH-UIA) World Conference in Jerusalem.

The prestigious accolade recognises leaders of KH-UIA and their commitment and volunteerism, who distinguish themselves with their contribution towards promoting the aims and goals of KH-UIA throughout the Jewish world.

Black was commended for his service with the UIA since 1979. He has worked in various roles including canvasser, UIA Victoria treasurer and member of the executive, where he supervises the finance staff and works in fundraising.

Speaking to The AJN, Black told of how he felt humbled by the whole experience – a highlight being meeting Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. “It was amazing to receive the honour in the company of philanthropists and Israel fundraisers from all around the world,” he said.

As well as his work with UIA, Black has served as treasurer, assistant treasurer and governor of Bialik College. He has been involved with Maccabi Football Club, and is a trustee of the St Kilda Hebrew Congregation Library Fund.

“Julian is the most deserving recipient of this prestigious award, spending the past 40 years volunteering with the organisation,” said UIA Victoria president Hayley Southwick.

“It is particularly special that he was able to receive it in Israel, on Israel’s 70th birthday.”

Black was one of seven international recipients of the award. Also recognised on the night was Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who received the Isaiah Award in appreciation for his leadership and years of commitment to the security and wellbeing of the State of Israel and its people.
