THE Maccabi AJAX First XI’s season of woe has continued following yet another loss, this time to South Yarra by 64 runs in a tough encounter.

THE Maccabi AJAX First XI’s season of woe has continued following yet another loss, this time to South Yarra by 64 runs in a tough encounter.

Resuming the match in the field at Como Park, the Firsts had the hosts out for 237, with David Fayman (4-57) and David Majtlis (5-73) sweeping up the tail.

With the bat, Darren Bloch and Aaron Fetter set about steadying the ship after an early wicket, but when Fetter was bowled shortly after, Majtlis was back in the action, this time with bat in hand.

The former skipper, in partnership with Bloch, got Maccabi to the tea break with the score at 2-41, before the side lost a string of wickets after the interval, slumping to 6-88.

Majtlis was then caught for 35, before Adam Trytell (49) continued to made good use of the short boundaries, teaming with Simon Morawetz to put on 48.

Morawetz’s dismissal left Trytell and JJ Zimmet with 12 overs to save the draw and in the end it was Trytell who was dismissed, with a superb catch denying the debutant a half-century and having the Firsts all out for 173.

The Second XI suffered a heavy loss to Indigos, after twice being bowled out within 40 overs.

Indigos began the day on 2-72 and took first innings points with ease.

However, through Simon Fisher and Gid Gelbart who took five wickets between them, Indigos only managed 7-190, before they declared.

Maccabi returned to the crease and was bundled out for a disappointing 93, conceding outright defeat.

The Third XI lost its match against Burnley CYMS, but did well to deny the home side an outright win.

After Maccabi was rolled for a paltry 68, its opposition then added 121 runs, setting the Thirds 163 from the final 34 overs for victory.

Maccabi ended its innings on 6-106 with Daniel Sneider adding 34 and Jonathon Dodge 32, but in the end the side still lost from its first-innings disappointment.

The Silver Arc Fourth XI was narrowly defeated by Canterbury on Sunday, after a top-order batting collapse saw the side fall 22 runs short.

The Firsts play Gunbower United at 1pm on Saturday at Gary Smorgon Oval  (Melway: 2N J1).
