THE community is being urged to dig deep for Magen David Adom (MDA) this weekend during its annual Red Sunday Telethon.

Volunteers from local schools and youth groups will donate their time to call MDA supporters with the aim of raising $165,000 to purchase a new 4×4 Life Support Ambulance.

“If Israel is important to you and part of your overall Jewish identity, then supporting causes like MDA is important not just because they save lives, but as an important part going forward as strong and proud Jews,” said CEO of Australian Friends of MDA Doron Lazarus.

MDA manages all of the emergency first responders services in Israel, and is responsible for responding to all incidents from accidents to life-threatening trauma and terror attacks.

They receive no direct government funding at all, relying solely on international donations.

“Four wheel drive ambulances provide lifesaving services in areas of rough terrain or under extreme weather conditions,” Lazarus explained.

“They will also allow MDA paramedics to reach injured patients in Israel’s remote communities, often their only chance of survival.”

In addition to emergency response, MDA also runs the national blood bank, as well as providing international humanitarian aid.

MDA medics are often first responders on the ground after an international emergency, setting up mobile hospitals and giving emergency first aid.

“This year we are linking our Annual Red Sunday Telethon with Pesach,” Lazarus explained.

“As we celebrate this time of freedom, we know that our dear brothers and sisters in Israel yearn for the time that they will enjoy the freedom that real peace will ultimately provide for them.”

In 2016, MDA raised enough funds to buy 23 medicycles, an ambulance and a range of other medical supplies and equipment.

Since the last telethon, there have been positive developments both for the local community and Israel.

“We now have tax deductibility status, and we are totally focused on maximising the benefit of every contribution towards best meeting MDA Israel’s needs in their relentless quest to save precious lives,” Lazarus said.

“All charities and all giving is important. If you are looking to give, then we ask you to donate to MDA and give back life. Because that’s what we do – save lives every day.”
