North Caulfield names new coach

NORTH Caulfield has appointed its new senior coach, with Tony Merakis set to take over from the departing Juan Mascuñano for the 2014 season.

NORTH Caulfield has appointed its new senior coach, with Tony Merakis set to take over from the departing Juan Mascuñano for the 2014 season.

Merakis arrives at the club with 11 consecutive years of coaching experience at several of Victoria’s best known clubs, including powerhouse teams South Melbourne and Richmond.

“Tony is a development style coach, which is in keeping with the approach our club has adopted over the past few seasons,” Maccabi’s director of football, Andrew Freund, said.

“He has excellent credentials, [including] a youth player development background, in addition to Premier League coaching experience, which makes him well equipped to lead our club in 2014.”

Merakis originally caught the eye of Maccabi ahead of the 2013 season, with the club needing to fill the role this time last year.

Freund spent two weeks with him at an Advanced Coaching Course run by the Football Federation of Australia at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

However, he had already accepted the head assistant senior coaching role at Richmond FC in the Victorian Premier League.

Prior to his stint at Richmond, Merakis’ most recent appointments included head coaching roles with South Melbourne’s youth and under-18 squads.

“Tony is a football mad, passionate and organised coach who can develop and guide our young team into the future,” North Caulfield president Morris Ritz said.
