VAUCLUSE MP Gabrielle Upton recently announced that Emanuel School alumnus Hannah Beder won the Harvey Norman Young Woman of the Year for her work in addressing the gender disparity in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

Beder mentors young women in the technology industry and volunteers for Girls Programming Network and Code Like A Girl, outside her career as a software engineer.

Upton said women like Beder, and Professor Maria Kavallaris who won the NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year Award, “make such a difference to other people’s lives, and should be immensely proud of their commitment to helping others in the community”.

Associate Professor Nadine Marcus, who supervised Beder’s honours project at UNSW, remarked, “I take pride in guiding young women to reach their full potential and Hannah has stood out in terms of her accomplishments and leadership.”
