OVER one million Jews in 1516 cities across the world will participate in the sixth Shabbat Project from 15-16 November.

In Sydney, the Shabbat Project team will join forces with a range of major communal organisations and synagogues to deliver a diverse range of events appealing to the whole community.

The AJN is proud to be a media partner for this year’s Shabbat Project, the theme of which is “Putting Unity in Community”.

“The Shabbat Project has become a key fixture on the Sydney Jewish community calendar,” chairman Daniel Sekers said.

“We know some people are highly connected to the community, while others may feel they haven’t quite found their place. The Shabbat Project is an opportunity for us all to get involved.”

In addition to a wide range of synagogue and organisation-based events, the Shabbat Project team will be collaborating with the UIA to bring the tastes, smells and sounds of Israel to the eastern suburbs for a unique Shabbat shopping experience on the Thursday before Shabbat.

A Havdalah concert with US/Israeli rock band Moshav is planned together with JNF Australia, Moriah College and Dover Heights Shule on Saturday evening to cap off the Shabbat experience on a high.

“We are such a diverse community with many backgrounds and varying levels of observance,” Sekers said.

“This year, we are encouraging the community to ‘Experience Shabbat’. Get involved in the phenomenon that even non-Jews are intrigued by with an opportunity to disconnect from the day-to-day and immerse yourself in an experience of renewal, nourishment and reconnection with family, friends and what our community is really about.”

Last year’s Shabbat Project saw more than 13,000 participants take part in over 125 events across Sydney.
