FOOTY

Rabbi’s AFL rallying call

Rabbi Kaltmann: 'I’m really excited to work with the AFL to promote multiculturalism and to use sport as a way to connect people of all backgrounds and faiths'.

BLOWING a shofar, pumping his fists with excitement and wearing black and white tzitzit to match his Collingwood jersey was how Melbourne’s own “AFL Rabbi”, Gabi Kaltmann celebrated the restart of the footy season earlier this month.

Rabbi Kaltmann, from the ARK Centre, was selected to be an AFL multicultural ambassador, and filmed his enthusiastic message welcoming the season’s resumption as his entry into a short video competition that his new colleagues, representing various faith and cultural backgrounds, were asked to participate in.

His video was selected as the winner.

Rabbi Kaltmann said, “I’m really excited to work with the AFL to promote multiculturalism and to use sport as a way to connect people of all backgrounds and faiths, as the first rabbi to be an AFL multicultural community ambassador.

“Footy is a game that transcends backgrounds, cultures and races. I look forward to working with other faith-based communities, players and stakeholders to find common ground through our shared interest in sport.”
