WHILE last-ditch attempts continue to keep South Head’s shule open, a quasi-South Head Synagogue service will be held at Moriah’s Dover Road campus tonight (Friday) and tomorrow morning (Saturday) for shabbat.

The South Head shule was due to be closed at midday on Friday and as a result congregants have been trying to find an alternative place to pray this shabbat.

While South Head officially has nothing to do with service, it has been organised by a member of that community.

“We would like to invite you to enjoy an independent, modern Orthodox, Zionist minyan with plenty of heart and soul for all ages,” an email to some South Head members said.

“As you will appreciate, this is a volunteer-led (impromptu) minyan and we welcome all of your participation.

“We thank those of you who have already offered to help at such short notice, and we are open to all volunteers, particularly in leading parts of services and other logistics.

A member of South Head contacted Moriah College and asked if the could use the property as a temporary home for this shabbat.

The Community Security Group has confirmed to The AJN that it will secure the property for this shabbat to allow the service to be held there.

Some members of the congregation are still hoping the South Head Synagogue will remain open for Shabbat.

More than 80 people gathered at the shule on Thursday night and resolved to try and stop it’s closure by offering to indemnify the administrator.

On Wednesday the administrator informed members that the shule would be closing at midday today (Friday).

“Members should attend the Synagogue to collect any personal items prior to that time. If necessary a further time for members to attend the Synagogue and collect their personal belongings will be notified during the course of next week,” the administrator said.
