Young gun Vic steal NSW golf tourno

YOUNG gun Victorian golfer Zac Winograd recently took out the Audi Centre Sydney 2012 NSW Maccabi Jewish Golf Championships, after besting the homegrown heroes with a stellar round of 79.

The 21-year-old carded the cracking score to trump New South Welshmen Gary Gild and Barry Reichman, who finished equal second on one shot back at 80.

“I actually didn’t think I was doing that well,” Winograd told The AJN.

“So it was a surprise to me more than anything else, because I thought I was out of it and with the score I had, I didn’t think I was in contention.

“But in the end my score was the best, so it was good.”

Over 110 competitors took to the Monash Country Club, with the country’s elite Jewish golfers coming together to jostle for a spot on the Australian team heading to the Maccabiah Games next year.

Winograd is right in the mix to be one of the golfers going to Israel next July, and said winning these kind of events is the perfect preparation for Maccabiah.

“The main reason for playing this event was for Maccabiah selection and just so I can continue to improve and do my best,” Winograd said.

“We find out the team in about three weeks, so we’ll wait and find out and hopefully I’m the youngest member on the team.”

The Yarra Yarra Golf Club and Maccabi Victoria Golf Club member plays three times a week and is hoping to develop his game as much as possible.

“I really want to improve my natural game and lower my handicap as much as I can,” Winograd said.

“I also want to play regular pennant golf for Yarra Yarra next year, so we’ll see how it goes.”

This year’s NSW championship event was significant for more than just the Maccabiah selection process because it also saw the welcome return of the ladies competition.

Rita Gould took the female event honours with 25 points, finishing ahead of Libby Moss, who recorded 22 points in second spot.
